At San Juan Dental Studio, your comfort and well-being always come first. Our skilled team works hard to give you a stress-free experience built on compassionate, gentle, and precise care. We will do everything possible to save your natural teeth. However, sometimes removing a tooth is the best way to protect your overall oral health.
Usually, baby teeth fall out right on schedule to make room for permanent ones. Sometimes, they refuse to let go because the roots fail to shrink properly or the tooth fuses to the bone. Leaving these teeth in place can block the path for adult teeth and disrupt the alignment of your child’s smile. We track this growth closely and will let you know if an extraction is needed to help permanent teeth grow properly.
A cavity starts as a tiny spot on your tooth’s outer layer. Without treatment, the decay moves deeper, eventually reaching the inner nerve. If a tooth suffers massive structural damage or an infection that we cannot fix with standard restorations, we may need to remove it to keep the rest of your mouth healthy.
Accidents happen, leading to chips, cracks, or serious breaks. We can fix many of these issues, but if the damage extends deep into the root or destroys too much of the tooth structure, saving it might not be possible. In these severe cases, extraction becomes necessary.
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. When left untreated, periodontal disease attacks the gums and bone that hold your teeth in place. As this support system weakens and shrinks away, teeth can become loose and ultimately require removal.
Your third molars, or wisdom teeth, are the last to arrive. Often, your jaw simply does not have enough space for them. They can become stuck (impacted), grow sideways, develop decay, or cause damage to neighboring teeth and tissues. We frequently recommend removing them early to prevent future trouble.
Sometimes, a jaw is too small to hold all of your permanent teeth, leading to a crowded and overlapping smile. If you are preparing for orthodontic treatment, we might need to remove a select few teeth. This creates the necessary room to move your remaining teeth into a healthy, functional, and beautifully aligned bite.

When a tooth needs to come out, our team delivers safe, expert care. We begin by looking over your medical and dental background to grasp your exact needs.
Please let us know about any health issues or medications you take. We may need to take extra precautions to protect your well-being. This could involve prescribing antibiotics, adjusting your medication routine, or getting approval from your physician. Make sure you follow all guidelines before your visit, and tell us if you feel unwell on the day of your appointment.
Your comfort is our priority. Before we start, we will explain the safety steps and how to prepare. We will also discuss your recovery plan and the best ways to replace the missing tooth if necessary.
To find the right approach, our dentist completes a thorough exam and takes digital x-rays of your mouth. Using these images, we determine whether you need a simple or a surgical extraction.
We use a simple extraction for teeth that sit fully above the gumline and have typical root structures. First, we numb the area using a local anesthetic. Then, our dentist carefully loosens the surrounding tissue and removes the tooth with forceps. We focus on keeping you comfortable and stress-free from beginning to end. If the thought of the procedure makes you anxious, we can discuss dental sedation options to help you relax.
You might need a surgical extraction if a tooth is badly damaged, stuck below the gums, or tightly anchored to your jawbone. Depending on your situation, we may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for this process. The doctor makes a small cut in the gums and removes a tiny bit of bone to reach the tooth. Just like with a simple extraction, we use local anesthesia to completely numb the area. We will go over all sedation choices, pre-surgery instructions, and next steps before we begin your care.

Your dental health is unique to you, which means we personalize your care. We provide specific instructions, activity limits, and medication details to ensure your recovery goes smoothly. While we may work with your primary care doctor, these guidelines cover standard care for a basic tooth extraction.
Right after your tooth extraction, we place a gauze pad over the site. Bite down firmly to apply pressure and control the bleeding. You can change this pad after one hour. If you still notice heavy bleeding, bite on a new pad for another 45 minutes. A little bit of blood is normal for the first 24 hours. Contact us if the bleeding stays heavy.
Your mouth will remain numb for a while after the procedure. Until this feeling fades entirely, take special care not to accidentally bite your lips, cheeks, or tongue.
A solid blood clot is the foundation of your healing. Do not rinse, spit, drink through a straw, or suck on hard candies. Doing these things can loosen the new clot and slow down your recovery.
Hold an ice pack against the outside of your cheek to keep swelling down. Keep it there for 10-minute stretches during your first day of recovery.
Smoking stops blood clots from forming and delays your healing. Stay completely away from cigarettes and all tobacco products for at least one full week.
Eating and Drinking
Stay away from hot, spicy, carbonated, or alcoholic drinks for the first 48 hours. Eat only soft foods and drink cool liquids for the first few days. Make sure to drink plenty of water so you stay hydrated.
You still need to brush your teeth, but be very gentle. Stay completely away from the extraction area for a few days. You can clean your mouth with a mild, warm saltwater rinse. Do not swish or spit the water. Just tilt your head and let the liquid fall naturally into the sink.
We will set up a follow-up appointment if you need stitches or if we need to check on a complex extraction. Make sure to attend this visit so we can monitor your healing.
Call our office immediately if you experience constant bleeding, severe pain, excessive swelling, a bad taste, or any other strange symptoms.
